I had the privilege of speaking at “Abhyudaya: Industry Leadership Conclave 2026”, organised by Organiser Weekly, held on 16 February 2026 at the Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Centre, Bhopal. The inaugural session was graced by Shri Satish Kumar ji, National Co-Convener of Swadeshi Jagran Manch, and the valedictory session by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav.

The conclave focused on “Industry Leaders – Atmanirbharta in Action” and witnessed the presence of a large number of entrepreneurs, media representatives and NGOs.

In my address, I emphasised the reality of the MSME sector versus the prevailing narrative in society.

For 70 years, SMEs have contributed nearly 45% of exports, around 40% of industrial output, and employment to over 12 crore people—yet they continue to struggle with structural disadvantages. High borrowing costs, additional CGTMSE charges, and limited real benefit from announced allocations raise a serious question: can small industries grow sustainably under such financial pressure?

The perception of preferential government procurement and timely payments is largely a myth. SMEs compete purely on price, often supplying at the lowest possible rates, while payment cycles stretch to 120 days or more—creating severe working capital stress.

Across the country, decades-old industrial areas housing micro and small enterprises suffer from poor infrastructure and neglect, even as new areas are announced. Meanwhile, isolated quality lapses are amplified to build a narrative against SMEs, despite their strong export performance.

The core issue remains lack of organisation and narrative strength. The SME sector must build a united, issue-based national voice focused on structural reforms rather than short-term relief.

India’s journey towards true Atmanirbharta will remain incomplete unless justice—policy, financial, and societal—is delivered to its SME backbone.
